April 14th - Remainder of School Year

*    Gov. DeWine announced that schools will remain closed for the remainder of the school year.  This distance learning schedule will be in effect and remain the same until the end of the school year.

*    Live instructional sessions are NOT mandatory!  We recognize that home situations vary, and the demands on families and students are different.  Live sessions will be recorded so that students can access them at any time.

*    We highly recommend that students attend live sessions if they are able.  These sessions will allow for interaction with teachers and peers and will also allow for academic and social-emotional needs to be met.

*    Teachers will begin live instructional sessions on April 14th.  Students should follow the schedule below:

        High school students:

*    Courses will meet according to the students’ daily schedule.  Black day classes will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays.  Gold day classes will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays.  There will not be any instruction for students on Fridays.

*    Each live instructional session will last 30 minutes.  There is 15 minutes between each class for transition (and bathroom and snack breaks).

*    Daily schedule:

*       Block 1 - 12:00 pm

*       Block 2 - 12:45 pm

*       Block 3 - 1:30 pm

       Middle school students:

*    Monday and Wednesday schedule-

*       Period 2 - 12:00 pm

*       Period 3 - 12:45 pm

*       Period 4 - 1:30 pm

*    Tuesday and Thursday schedule-

*       Period 5 - 12:00 pm

*       Period 7 - 1:30 pm

       Elementary students:

       3-5 Students

*    Each elementary class will meet for 30 minutes twice a week (for a total of 1 hour of live instruction per core class.  Core classes include reading, math, science, and social studies).

*    Elementary sessions will occur between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm Monday through Thursday.  There will not be any  instruction for students on Friday.

*    Each elementary teaching team has established a schedule within their building.  You should receive a schedule of live instructional sessions from your child’s teacher.  If you have not received a schedule by Monday, April 13th - please contact the teacher or building principal.

       K-2 Students

*    Each primary class will meet for 45 minutes per day.

*    The live sessions for k-2 students will occur Monday through Thursday.  There will not be any instruction for students on Friday.

*    Each primary teacher has scheduled their live sessions between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm.  You should receive a schedule of live instructional sessions from your child’s teacher.  If you have not received a schedule by Monday, April 13th - please contact the teacher or building principal.

*       Things you can do to help your student transition to live instructional sessions:

*        Create a work space for your student.  For younger students, this might be an important way for them to take some control of their current situation.  If you find that you are lacking school supplies for your student at home - please contact your building principal.  We can make arrangements to provide basic supplies so that learning can continue.

*        Create a visual schedule.  We have provided links for high school, middle school, and 3-5 students to write in their schedules so they can see what each day should look like.  Most primary teachers are providing calendars.

If you want to use these calendars - make a copy and save to your drive.  Or, print a copy to write on.  This copy is locked for editing!

*        Grades 3-5 Schedule: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1WIMop3th_lyExYyR5Jf1K2LFa3lqlWnFCRhi_eOGJs4/edit?usp=sharing

*        Be mindful that your student, and anyone and anything in view of the camera, will be seen by the teacher, other students, and possibly parents.

*        Clothing should be appropriate for school - both students and adults.

*        The location of your student’s work space should be appropriate for others to see - laying in bed or being in the bathroom - probably not a good idea!

*        Kids should brush their hair and teeth - these are just good hygiene tasks that should not fall by the wayside just because we aren’t leaving home!

*        If your student is unable to attend live sessions - and this could happen for a variety of reasons - encourage them, or make time for them, to watch the recorded sessions posted in the google classroom.

*        Support your student in their learning - ask questions, follow up on work, and help them when you can.

*        DO NOT get into battles with your child.  We recognize that this is a stressful time for everyone for different reasons.  School work and learning is important, but so is your mental health - and the mental health of your student.  If you are having trouble getting your child to complete assignments, please reach out to the teacher for assistance.

*        We do not expect you to teach your child!  Let your student complete their work on their own.  If everything is correct when it gets turned in, we won’t know how to help them or what they don’t understand.  Teaching them is our job - supporting them is yours!

If you have questions or concerns, or are feeling overwhelmed or confused, PLEASE reach out to your child’s teacher(s) or building principal first.  If they cannot address your concerns, you can also contact me.  Thank you for everything you are doing to support your child in this new learning environment!

*        Live sessions are NOT mandatory.  We understand that everyone is having a different experience right now.

*        If you are unable to attend live sessions - and this could happen for a variety of reasons - watch the recorded sessions posted in the google classroom.  Important information can and will be shared during these sessions.

Reminders from my last letter:

*       If you haven’t already, create a workspace at home.  This can be anywhere you can find a small space to set your chromebook and keep your school supplies all the time.  It’s tough to get started working and learning if you have to spend a half hour gathering up all your materials every day!

*       If you do not have the necessary school supplies at home to complete assignments, please email your teacher or building principal.  We can find a way to get you what you need to keep learning.

*       Every class has a Google classroom code.  If you do not know how to access the Google classroom - email your teacher!!!  You are responsible for getting into the classroom to see what your assignments are.

Reach out to your teachers, principals, counselors, or Dr. Mlakar if you are struggling or don’t understand something.  We can’t help you if we don’t know you need it - and when we don’t see you everyday, it’s hard for us to know what is going on.  Take care of yourselves - and learn some stuff along the way!
