Winter Sports Update

As you are likely aware, The District paused athletics on November 13.  Last week, Riverside Local Schools met with Superintendents, Principals and Athletic Directors who represent the Western Reserve Conference. Some districts in red designated counties (Mayfield and Brush in Cuyahoga County and Chardon and Kenston in Geauga County) expressed their intention to proceed with practices and contests so long as the games, meets, matches are not against schools located in purple counties.  This reluctancy is certainly understandable and caused the WRC to convene a meeting to adopt an alternate plan for the remainder of the winter season.

To salvage the integrity of the season, the Western Reserve Conference voted in favor of pausing interleague play until January 15, 2021. Some or all of the conference athletic contests that are on the schedule for December through the middle of January could potentially be rescheduled after January 15.

The original games scheduled after January 15 would remain unaltered. Once more detailed schedules are developed, we will get them to parents of student athletes. As other schools are practicing and competing against non-league teams, we have decided to initiate our practice start time as December 14 to allow our teams to prepare for the season.

Since conference athletic contests will not begin until after January 15, 2021, we may try to schedule a few contests with out of conference teams sometime between January 2-14. This is only if conditions will allow us to do so.

Please understand that our season depends on many factors. These factors include our coaches and players adhering to health protocols, directives from the Ohio Department of Health, Lake County General Health District, the Governor’s office, and what the WRC determines to do with regards to the season.

Riverside cannot solely control the direction of the Western Reserve Conference winter season, as we are only one vote of eight.  With that said, the season will continue with or without us, therefore the district will continue to provide interscholastic opportunities to our students, so long as health related directives allow and with the premise that participation will ultimately be decided by the parent and child.
Middle Schools in the WRC are also working together to reschedule games after January 15 as well to complete the boys’ basketball season and to begin the girls’ basketball season and wrestling.

Attached to this letter is our Winter Sports Return to Activity and Competition Plan. Please read through the document to understand our expectations and guidelines for the season.

Thank you all for your patience and understanding.
