ART100 ART 1
– 2 semesters – 1 credit (9, 10, 11, 12)

Prerequisite: Successful completion of 8th grade art is helpful

Art 1 is the introductory course in art. This course is designed to expose the beginning art student to a variety of art experiences including drawing, painting, two and three-dimensional design and print making. Work is done on a project basis and is graded on the student's individual development rather than in comparison with the works of others in the class. Written tests and exams will be based on vocabulary and art concepts, materials and techniques.

ART200 ART 2
– 2 semesters – 1 credit (10, 11, 12)

Prerequisite: "C" average or better in Art 1 would offer the student a good foundation for this class

This course expands and further develops the fundamental skills learned in Art 1, and introduces new materials and techniques. During the course, every effort is made to acquaint the student with the vastness of the field of art as well as assisting the development of the student's own unique, individual style. Work is done on a project basis and is graded on the student's individual development rather than in comparison with the works of others in the class. Written tests and exams will be based on vocabulary and art concepts, materials and techniques.

ART300 ART 3
– 2 semesters – 1 credit (11, 12)

Prerequisite: "C" average or better in Art 2 would offer the student a good foundation for this class

Individual expression of original thoughts and ideas is stressed in this course. New media and techniques will be introduced. Students will use elements of design to produce original, creative works. Written tests and exams will be based on vocabulary and art concepts, materials and techniques.

ART400 ART 4
– 2 semesters – 1 credit (12)

Prerequisite: "C" average or better in Art 3 would offer the student a good foundation for this class

This advanced studio class is dedicated to the creation of works appropriate to the student’s portfolio. Students will utilize previously learned skills to produce creative works that will involve mastery of media as well as expansion of imaginative visual imagery. Some projects will involve independent inquires and research as students will create projects of their choice within given topics. Students will be required to create a digital portfolio of their work.

ART500 ART CONCEPTS
– 2 semesters – 1 credit (11, 12)

Prerequisite: For the advanced student with the upper classmen having preference

This course is offered to both students enrolled in studio art classes and those with no specific interest in creating works of art, but who have a curiosity about the development of different periods of art. Grades will predominately be based on comprehensive slide exams. Students will participate in class discussions, small group discussions, debates, note taking, and occasional class art activities. Students will learn about various forms of art in the context of world cultures and historical periods. Students will develop an appreciation for art and art processes throughout the world. Students will develop an understanding of such disciplines as sociology, religion, politics, cultures, and psychology in reference to how they represent society from ancient to modern times. Students will develop a sense of taste and maturity in understanding art so that their knowledge may enrich their lives and personal perceptions of themselves.

ART550 PHOTOGRAPHY
– 1 semester – ½ credit (10, 11, 12)

Fee Required

An introduction to the fundamentals of photography, this course concentrates on using negative films for prints. Basic camera operation, shutter speed, aperture, proper film selection, light metering, film exposure, image composition, and lens selection are topics covered. Darkroom techniques including film and paper processing are implemented. Students will be responsible for researching other photographers, completing written assignments, and keeping a journal. STUDENTS MUST HAVE ACCESS TO A 35 MM SLR CAMERA WITH AN ADJUST-ABLE SHUTTER, APERTURE, AND LENS.

ART555 PHOTOGRAPHY ASSISTANT
– 1 semester – ¼ credit (10, 11 ,12)

Prerequisite: Photography and permission of instructor

Special emphasis is placed on the development of leadership skills, initiative and responsibility. The student is expected to complete assigned tasks without the direct supervision of the teacher.

ART600 ART APPRECIATION –

The course is designed to provide students with a basic awareness of the elements and principles of art. Students who have not taken an art course since 8th grade are eligible for this course. Projects are often related to historical periods in art and major artists. Students will be expected to create artwork, take notes, do research on their own, and complete written assignments.
