HOW DO YOU PLAY 'BE A LETTER DETECTOR'?
Each week, your child will
bring home a “letter Detector” paper. This is actually a song sheet for
each letter person’s song. After the children have learned how to print
the capital and lowercase letter, we work on recognizing the letter in
print. I will play the letter person’s song two times. During that
time, the children will use their letter detector (a highlighter) to find and
highlight the capital and lowercase letter featured that week. In this
activity, they are encouraged to start at the top and scan the text from left
to right, as they do when reading. It will not always be possible for
them to find all of the letters during this time. I would encourage you
to have your child complete this activity at home. If you notice they are
going straight down the page rather than left to right across the line, work
with them and show them how to do so. As an extension to this activity,
together count the number of letters they were able to find and write that
number below the letter person. You need not return this paper to school.
